We were absolutely thrilled to be invited to join the crew over on the Movies We Dig podcast to talk about the first season of the television show Romulus. Released in 2020, Romulus was created by Matteo Rovere. Filmed in Lazio, with a script entirely in archaic Latin, you might think this show would only be of interest to hardcore language fans. Well, we’re here to encourage you to seek out this show.
Romulus as you’ve never seen him before!
You’ll be forgiven for wondering WHO is Romulus in the early episodes, but watch on and all will be revealed. The first season comprises of ten episodes with plenty of drama, some great side-plots, and some fearsome takes on 8th century BCE warrior culture in central Italy.

This isn’t Matteo Rovere’s first turn about the block at the Romulus and Remus foundation story, with his film Il Primo Re coming out in 2019, also spoken in archaic Latin. Let’s take a moment to empathise with the actors in both that film and Romulus for rising to the challenge of bringing gritty emotion and passion to a language that has echoes of modern Italian, but is certainly different as well.
Our interview does contain spoilers, so consider yourself warned! You can enjoy it over on the Movies We Dig YouTube or wherever you enjoy your podcasts 🙂
