In very exciting news, especially if you’re following us from the United States, you can now spot us on National Geographic!
Earlier this year, we had the great privilege to be part of a new documentary series on the gladiators of ancient Rome – Gladiators: Warriors of the Ancient World. Last week the first three episodes aired and this week the final three episodes came out too.
Each episode follows an individual gladiator (or beast hunter) and focuses on what we can know from the ancient evidence and what might be more speculative. As you know, Dr Rad is an expert on Spartacus and OF COURSE he gets his own episode because he’s made waves that have rippled through the thousands of years since he broke out of the ludus…
For those of you in the UK, Australia, or elsewhere, we’re not sure about release dates. Even we haven’t been able to watch the whole series and we were in it! If we learn more (we’ve asked the question of the production team) we’ll be sure to let you know.

Being in a documentary has been a really interesting experience and learning how a documentary series comes together has been fascinating. It’s also quite different from our podcast, which is very much about the details whereas for a narrative to fit into the constraints of a documentary episode, clear decisions about what to include and what to exclude need to be made. In this respect, a documentary is like a launching point for curiosity and like any modern media deserves to be viewed and considered with one’s analytical faculties switched on.
If you get a chance to watch the series, we’d love to know your thoughts! For us this was a real thrill – it’s not everyday you get to say you were part of a NatGeo doco – we’re stoked to have been asked to be part of it!
